1.1 This specification ASTM A536 applies to castings fabricated from ductile iron, also referred to as spheroidal or nodular iron. It is characterized by cast iron that contains graphite predominantly in a spherical shape and is essentially free of other graphite forms, as defined in Terminology A644.

1.2 It is not possible to establish a precise quantitative correlation between the properties of the iron at different locations within a single casting or between the properties of the casting and those of a test sample that has been cast from the same iron (refer to Appendix X1).

1.3 The values presented in inch-pound units are to be considered as the standard. The figures provided in parentheses represent the corresponding conversions to the International System of Units (SI), which are included for informational purposes only and do not constitute the standard units.
