The test procedures outlined here are formulated to evaluate the hydraulic conductivity, or permeability, of water-saturated porous materials using a permeameter with a flexible wall, within a temperature range of approximately 15 to 30°C (59 to 86°F). These procedures are applicable to a variety of specimen types, including intact, reconstituted, remolded, compacted, and others, as long as their hydraulic conductivity is below about 1 × 10^6 m/s (1 × 10^4 cm/s), adhering to the head loss criteria specified in 5.2.3. For constant-volume testing, the hydraulic conductivity generally needs to be less than around 1 × 10^7 m/s.

In instances where the hydraulic conductivity exceeds about 1 × 10^6 m/s but does not exceed about 1 × 10^5 m/s, it is necessary to increase the size of the hydraulic tubing and enhance the porosity of the porous end pieces. Additional approaches, including the use of a more viscous fluid or reducing the cross-sectional area of the test specimen in an appropriate manner, or a combination of both, may also be effective. The fundamental requirement is to satisfy the conditions detailed in Section 5.

The methodologies for collecting, recording, and calculating data as specified in this standard are considered to be the industry norm. They also serve as a guide for the number of significant digits that are typically retained. The procedures do not account for variations in materials, the intent behind data collection, specialized studies, or the user’s specific objectives. It is customary to adjust the number of significant digits in reported data to align with these factors. The standard does not extend to the consideration of significant digits used in analytical methods for engineering design purposes.
