ASTM D7647-24 pdf download,Standard Test Method for Automatic Particle Counting of Lubricating and Hydraulic Fluids Using Dilution Techniques to Eliminate the Contribution of Water and Interfering Soft Particles by Light Extinction.

This test procedure is designed to assess the particle concentration and the distribution of particle sizes in both new and operational oils intended for lubrication and hydraulic applications.

The particles under consideration fall within the size range of 4 µm (c) to 200 µm (c), with the upper boundary of this range varying depending on the type of automatic particle counter employed.

Note 1: In the context of this test procedure, water droplets that are not obscured by the dilution process are identified as particles. Additionally, clusters of particles are identified and reported as a single, larger particle.

Note 2: The notation (c) signifies that the equipment has been calibrated in compliance with ISO 11171. This (c) suffix is exclusively applicable to particles measuring up to 50 µm.

Lubricants that are amenable to analysis with this test procedure are classified into two categories: petroleum-based products and synthetic-based products, which include substances such as polyalpha olefin, polyalkylene glycol, and phosphate ester. The test is valid for oils with viscosities up to 1000 mm²/s at a temperature of 40 °C. This method may also be suitable for other types of petroleum and synthetic lubricants not explicitly listed in the precision specifications.

It may not be appropriate to analyze samples containing visible particles with this test method.

Samples that become opaque upon dilution are not suitable for analysis using this test procedure.
