1.1 This specification defines the performance standards for outdoor ambient air quality sensors, as outlined in Practice D8406.

1.2 This standard does not apply to sensors or devices that measure atmospheric pollutants through open paths, lidar, or imaging techniques.

1.3 This standard applies to sensors that can detect outdoor criteria pollutants in ambient air, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), at concentrations that are significant to public health.

1.4 The evaluation must be conducted by a qualified entity that meets internationally recognized quality standards for testing laboratories, such as ISO/IEC 17025. It is expected that the entity carrying out the performance evaluation in accordance with Practice D8406 will adhere to this specification during the assessment process.
